There are a few different chat modes, each with a different audience who will receive your message. First, press Enter to open a message box. Next, you must select a chat mode. You can do this by pressing Tab while the message box is open or by left-clicking on the mode names in the lower left of the screen. You can also manually type the shortcut command for each mode.

* Tip: If someone sends you a user-to-user message, press R, and you will open a message box that is already addressed to them. This makes it easier to reply to people or to hold one-on-one conversations.
In addition to the above chat modes, you can create or join other chat channels. The Chat Window is also used to activate certain commands unrelated to chatting, such as sending a friend request or leaving a party.
(Visit Advanced Commands for more information on commands that utilize the Chat Window.)
